Value stream mapping does not need to be an overly complex process – remember that the primary goal is to capture the “As is” process – material and information flows – It doesn’t need overly complex tools or equipment – paper and pencil will do (although there are software packages if needs must).  Stakeholder involvement is key in order to capture the process accurately – be patient during the process – capture the facts and take time to understand the flows correctly.

Things you’ll need for your Value Stream Mapping workshop

1/ Room to hold meeting and to “pin up” your value stream map during and after construction

2/ Participants/Stakeholders from the process

3/ Pens/Paper/Post it’s

4/ Pre-drawn/cut Value stream mapping icons (Note: in our experience it’s best to photocopy some sheets of commonly used icons and have them ready so they can be stuck to the map to speed up the process)

5/ Data – make sure that you have as much data to hand as possible or be prepared to go and look immediately following the workshop.

6/ Set enough time aside (dependant on the process) to capture the flows – remember not to rush – accuracy is key.

7/ Remember to focus on the “As is” – do not get involved in redesigning the process at this stage.

Value stream mapping process

  1. Identify the target product, product family, or service that you will be value stream mapping.
  2. Draw a current state value stream map including
    1. Process steps,
    2. Information flows
    3. Material Flows
    4. Delays
    5. Stakeholders/participants
    6. Data at each stage (for example material, cycle times)
    7. Resources
  3. As issues are captured – place them on a “post it” note and place them on the map at the relevant section.
  4. Once the map is complete – review “end to end” with your stakeholders to ensure accuracy
