Visual Management is one of the cornerstones of lean – when the workforce can quickly see how the business is performing they can respond quickly to changes in trends or shortfalls in targets.

Effective Visual management uses charts, graphs and pictures as they can be produced fairly quickly and are easy to understand.

There are various types of charts that can be used depending on what you need to communicate – while line and bar charts are most commonly used –radar charts (also called a spider diagram) can be an excellent method of communicating and are a great way of using a single chart to display a number of performance results.

Radar charts can be used to display any number of business performance for example

• Comparing performance between suppliers
• Comparing performance between workcell teams or shifts in a manufacturing centre
• Measuring performance against business strategies

Radar charts aren’t suitable for everything and you need to consider limiting the number of items your measuring in order that the chart doesn’t become to cluttered – also ensure that the each element can be measured in the same way – for example measuring the % on time delivery from a supplier and the value of spend $ will produce an odd looking diagram so it’s best to stick to elements that can be measured on the same scale.

How to produce a radar chart using Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel comes with some inbuilt charting tools which makes producing Radar charts easy! You can have your own radar charts up and running in no time all you need is your data! Here’s our step by step guide to producing a radar chart in excel

1/ Determine what you will measure
2/ Generate your list of criteria that you will track
3/ Gather the scores/results for the above
4/ Create a table to hold your data
5/ Create a chart using the Excel Chart Wizard – select Radar type
6/ Format your completed chart.
